To amazing partnerships!

Thanks to our local DNRC Fire Crew, our new trail is built!

This summer saw the completion of the approximately 2.5 mile Northwest Passage Trail located in the High Trails System's North-West corner, all thanks to our great Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) team!

Kyle Rawson, DNRC Dillon Engine Boss, led a fire crew building the Northwest Passage Trail, working almost weekly from June to August. The firefighters stationed in Dillon routinely use the High Trails for pre-season endurance training. According to Don Copple, the local Fire Management Officer, building trail also allows them to use the tools of the trade such as pulaskis and work as a team.

The USFS recreation specialists helped specify the trail alignment after BTC acquired the land in 2018. Thanks to that addition, loops from the trailhead exceeding 5 miles are now possible. Traffic on the trail suggests that it is already very popular with both hikers and bicyclists!

DNRC Fire Fighters have previously contributed to the Cliff and Tim's Ridge trails' construction. Their work is always much appreciated.

Funding needed to finish the Noble Av. Trail

Now that the North and South sections are done, it is time to find more funding to finish the middle section our newest trail: Noble Avenue Trail.

Initially, the middle section was planned to be a bike lane adjacent to the road. This would be done in conjunction with the city as they will resurface the Noble Avenue street.

Our new trail is already enjoyed by so many people, and has received so much praised, that we now feel that we should try to go the extra mile, and make it entirely off the street. It would be achieved by putting the ditch in a culvert and the trail on top of it.

An off-street trail is preferable in term of safety, esthetics, and user experience. We need to raise about $28,000 to do it. We are applying for grants, but have had no success so far. Can you help us reach our goal? Send an email to beaverheadtrails@gmail.com if you can help!

Work evening at Selway Park

Thank you to the 11 volunteers that helped with the maintenance of Selway Park on the evening of July 22!

Volunteers weeded the vegetated areas, raked the trails, removed fallen branches, and picked up trash so everybody can continue to enjoy this beautiful site for playing in the river, fishing, launching boats, or simply picnic in the shade.

Recently, we installed a bike rack and a second picnic table, and planted milkweed. Go check it out!

Recent work days at the High Trails

This summer has been successful so far for trails maintenance!

  • 14 volunteers on July 11th, 2020 to work on Grand Canyon Trail

  • 13 volunteers on June 27th, 2020 to work on the Cliff Trail

  • Plenty of volunteers pulling weeds as a “social distancing volunteering” weekends, or during the work days. We pulled or sprayed Dalmatian Toadflax, Henbane, Houndstongue, and Mullein. Thank you to the BLM and County for their help!

  • The DNRC crew built the NW Passage in June/July.

  • The Youth Challenge helped retrieve chicken-wire fencing from our wildlife-friendly fencing project

Thank you to all the volunteers helping out this year, despite the difficult situation since the beginning of the year!

Cliff Trail South Section Rerouted - High Trails

The Trail has been re-routed in order to bring it back to BTC land. Right now, the trail is flagged with blue. We will install signage and more permanent trail markers soon, but until then, please follow the flags as best as you can.
Please do not use the two-tracks beyond the flags and respect private property of our great neighbors.
Thank you and enjoy the trails!

Southern section of the new Noble Avenue Trail completed!

The Southern Part of the Noble Avenue Trail was completed in April 2020. The ground work was done by R.E. Miller and Sons, and the fence was installed by Southwest Fence - thank you both for such a great work!

Special thank you for R.E. Miller and Sons for donating a bench at the end of the trail!

The trail is receiving many positive comments and lots of usage already!

For more information about the project, consult our fact sheet.
